Trip Facts
Welcome to Colombo ! the fast growing, attractive and capital of every city in Sri Lanka. Almost overnight, skyscrapers arise from where old buildings once stood. Yet in some parts, the old world charm is still retained with its all glamour and beauty. There comes the 100-year-old clock tower, while driving through the Commercial area of the ‘Fort‘ (the Portuguese and Dutch colonial Mansions) and then drives passing Bazzar Pettah – a noisy Oriental bazaar with a hotchpotch of humanity, ancient vehicles, bargains, mosques and temples. Visit a Hindu and Buddhist temple and the Jumi-ulAlfar Jumma Mosque. Continue with the tour through the WolFendal Dutch Church and Hultsdorf Law Courts, to the residential area of Cinnamon Gardens and on to the Independence Square and the Convention Centre (BMICH) and the National Museum.
Overview
Visit to Ambalangoda where the famed ‘devil masks‘ are produced. After visiting one of the workshops, proceed to Hikkaduwa, which is renowned for its varied and colorful coral formations. View these from a glass-bottomed boat.
Drive on to Galle, the Old Portuguese Fort rebuilt by the Dutch. It is one of the best preserved examples of 17th century coastal fortifications that can be found anywhere in the world. Despite being credited as a Dutch Port structure it was actually the Portuguese who started construction, but they were usurped by the Dutch, who proceeded with the foundation that they inherited. It is today the largest fort created by this Empire in Asia. Galle is also the center of the ebony wood carvers and handmade laces; visit these workshops in the course of the tour. Tour includes lunch and boat ride at Hikkaduwa.
